– Values and visions of history at Department of History, Hanyang University –
History is a discipline to explore human experience through time. It is an intellectual inqiury that analyzes and interprets the holistic interaction of human life, institutions, ideas, and culture, beyond the facts of the past. Our department adheres to the essence of this discipline, with the core aim to foster creative and insightful historians who would reflect on reality and contribute to future society.
1. Reading the past
“Reading the past” implies the act of critically understanding the context and structure of the time, human choices, and their consequences, rather than merely re-creating the past. To this end, the department provides a program for students to develop the following historical reasoning skills.
Historical analysis: The ability to interpret and synthesize various historical sources to understand the context and implications of historical events.
Critical thinking: The ability to discern perspectives and biases in historical narratives and explore various interpretive possibilities.
Structural understanding: An integrated view regarding the way in which politics, economy, society, and culture interact and change.
With the discipline of history, the department offers opportunities to explore the nature of human socieyt and the principles of change through the mirror of the past, and to examine today’s issues from the view of historical continuity and discontinuity.
2. Envisioning the future
The department aims to foster the ability to actively envion the future based on insights gained from the past. It embodies the goal with the following educational vision.
Creative problem solution: The ability to examine the complex challenges of contemporary socieyt by drawing on historical examples to recognize problems and suggest solutions.
Inter/Trans-disciplinary thinking: A convergent program to combine literature analysis with various methodologies including digital humanities, oral history, and social theory.
Global perspective: Broadening a historical viewpoint in the global age by comparing and analyzing human experience in the context of East Asian and World History, beyond Korean History.
Our curriculum offers students to be members of the future society with intellectual reflectiona and ethical sensitivity, who contributes to the public interest based on historical thinking.
3. Mission statement of the department
The department offers education and research with the following missions
- Pursuing a balance of academic excellence and social contribution of the discipline of history
- Providing personalized education relevant to respective student’s academic passion and critical capabilities
- Substantiating the essence of humanities to understand human beings and society through history and explore the value of co-existence
“Reading the past to envision the future” is more than a slogan to declare academic identity, educational orientation, and social responsibility of the department. Through history, the department believes, one can draw a map fo the future. We look forward to welcoming prospective students to join us on this journey.
