Career prospect

The Department of History offers programs of methodologies, developing historical thinking skills, cultivating the ability to demonstrate competence in key areas of study. The department provides curricula for the fields of Korean History, East Asian History, and Western History with specified periods and subjects. Programs encourages students to recognize the contemporary society and explore various career opportunities relevant to their study.


There are mainly two paths for students after graduation: 1) Graduate School to further develop skills in major field and become a professional historian; 2) Pursuing a career to apply skills from major fields. 

Career opportunities

Faculties, Researchers, Curators With postgraduate degree (MA or PhD), one would become lecturers and faculties teaching and researching at higher educational institutions, researchers working at history-related institutes such as the National History Compilation Commission, the Northeast Asia History Foundation, and the Institute for the History of Independence Movement, and academic staff or researchers at national, municipal, and private museums and cultural centres.
Archivists With a bachelor’s or master’s degree and a certified period of on-the-job training, one would work as an archivist to manage the records of public institutions at all levels, including the national and local governments, and the records of companies and religious institutions. This is a career with high prospects to work at various organizations in the future under the relevant laws. (In the case of public institutions, the archivist is given the 6th grade of civil servants.)
History Teachers The department offers a currlculum for teaching profession for secondary school history teachers. One may obtain a secondary teacher’s certificate with the completion of the teaching major and become a history teacher in Korean history, East Asian History, and World History and middle and high schools.
Public officials As a graduate with a liberal arts education, which increasingly bears importance in rapidly changing world, one can enter the civil service through various examination systems. One can work in the general administration of central ministries, local governments, and metropolitan offices, as well as in the management of local cultural assets.
Journalism and Broadcasting Many of history graduates with a liberal arts eduction have worked in the media, including major newspapers and broadcasting corporations. As a journalist, one can contribute to the public with a view of history and historical knowledge.
Cultural tourism guide/Historical tour specialist Cultural tourism and historical tours are among the cultural industries that have seen a surge in demand in recent years. Graduates can become high-quality cultural tourism guides or historical and cultural tour specialists based on their knowledge of history, cultural asets, and cultural sites.

Graduate program

In the master’s programme(taught and research), a postgraduate student will acquire basic research methodology and knowledge of the period of major, develop the ability to examine relevant sources, and explore the period, area, or topic of interest for the writing of master’s thesis. With the required basic skills and own field of specialization, the researcher joins the academic community from different universities, majors and nationalities at conferences, congresses and seminars. Upon the completion of master’s degree, one can either enter a job to use the skills or continue on for a doctroal degree. 

Our PhD program provides postgraduates opportunities to become an expert in the field of choice. After the completion of a PhD program, most PhD graduates will either teach at universities or work as a researcher at a research institutes. In addition to the service as an educator of undergraduate and graduate students, one will also participate in various conferences and congresses and interact with a wider range of scholars.
