Graduation Requirements

Credit Requirements

(1) A minimum of 27 credits must be completed for the Master's degree program, and a minimum of 38 credits for the Doctoral degree program.
(2) Minimum major credit requirements by department: 
   ① Master's Program : A minimum of 11 major credits out of the total 27 program credits. 
   ② Doctoral Program : A minimum of 17 major credits out of the total 38 program credits.
(3) Regarding the recognition of credits from other departments as major credits 
: Courses taken in other departments with the permission of the academic advisor and department chair may be recognized as major credits upon the approval of the Dean of the Graduate School.
(4) Master's students must complete a total of 5 research credits(2 required, 3 elective), and Doctoral students must complete a total of 4 required research credits.

  • Master's Program

(1) Korean History Major : Korean Classics & History, Lecture on the Chosun Dynasty from the perspective of the East Asian History, Korean modern history and cultural contact
(2) East Asian History Major : Encounter With Chinese Classics & History, State and Nomads in Late Imperial China, Modern China and East Asia
(3) Western History Major : Global History in Primary Sources , Lecture on the Modern Europe from the perspective of the Transnational History, Lecture on the European History

Comprehensive Examination

  • Eligibility

    ① Master's Program : Students who have earned 18 or more credits in the Master's program and have completed all prerequisite courses.
    ② Doctoral Program : Students who have earned, or are expected to earn in the current semester, 38 credits in the Doctoral program and have completed all prerequisite courses.

    c. Western History Major : Seminar on the European Historiography and the Dissertation Writing, Studies in Cultures and Sub-Culture of The European History, Topics in Contemporary History of Europe

    a. Korean History Major : Seminar on History of Late Chosun Dynasty, Studies on the Social Economic History, Issues of Korean Contemporary History

Language Proficiency Exam

  • Students in the Master's, Doctoral, and Combined Master's-Doctoralprograms are all eligible to take the exam starting from their first semester. They must either pass the exam or submit alternative documents before applying for their degree thesis.

Thesis Advising, Presentation, and Evaluation Methods

(1) The thesis presentation is held during the first month (March, September) of the semester in which the degree thesis is submitted.   However, in the case of a doctoral thesis, a preliminary presentation must be held at the end of the preceding semester (June, December). The student must obtain the consent of a majority of the attending professors to be eligible for thesis submission in the following semester. Both the preliminary and final presentations are conducted publicly in an open venue, with professors and graduate students of the relevant field in attendance.
(2) By the time of their thesis submission, doctoral students must have published two research papers in journals indexed in SSCI, A&HCI, or equivalent international databases, or in journals listed as candidates or higher by the National Research Foundation of Korea.
(3) Selection of Academic Advisor    
 Master's students must select an advisor by the end of their first semester, and doctoral students must do so at the beginning of their first semester. For master's students, the specific field of study is confirmed at this time. However, if an advisor is changed, students in both programs must receive thesis advising from the new advisor for a minimum of one year.
(4) Thesis Length    
   - Master's Program : Approximately 150 pages (based on 200-character manuscript paper).
   - Doctoral Program : Approximately 800 pages (based on 200-character manuscript paper).
(5) Regarding the English Abstract    
   - Upon submission of a doctoral thesis, an English abstract of approximately 15 pages must also be submitted.

Master's Thesis Replacement System

  • The Master's thesis can be replaced by methods such as submitting and publishing  a paper in a professional academic journal, or translating and annotating primary  source materials of high academic value.
